Snow and WIP

So for the past two days it has done this. Snowed. Blah! It would be pretty if it wasn't the beginning of SEPTEMBER! Welcome to Canada folks! Most of the weather stereotypes about us are pretty much true, just so you know.

The power was out at the school, so no school for the boys today. They are quietly playing- surprise surprise- and I thought I'd take the opportunity to get in a little sewing while we are house bound.
Then I remembered.

No sewing machine- it's at my sisters. We share a machine.

So it's a cutting day for me. And I hate cutting. But it must be done. I wish I could hire someone to cut for me. That would be nice. Expensive, but nice.

I'm cutting more strips for the modern bargello I'm doing. Modify that to the quilt that I'm still doing.
My goal is to have it done by the end of this month.

I'm trying to decide on a grey minky backing or the silver mirror ball dot of Micheal Miller. Minky scares the heck out of me, but is much more suited to where we live. But the mirror dot is so pretty! Decisions, decisions.

Linking up for a work in progress. Hopefully soon a finish!

  1. That's cute you share a machine with your sister, but that would drive me crazy! At least you got cutting done! Your quilt is so cool, I've never made a bargello!

  2. This quilt is going to turn out incredible! I've always been super impressed by bargello quilts but have a hard time finding any that are modern enough for me. But your is fabulous. I think it's the colors and the thick sections of gray. Nice work!

    1. Lisa, I don't know it such a thing exists, but that's what I'm calling it. I always admired the complexity of a bargello, but usually not the fabrics used to make them. When I saw the modern fabrics I knew I wanted to use them in this quilt. Hopefully the finished product matches the vision!

  4. I usually hate bargellos but YOURS I love! It looks so fresh and fun! Down in North Carolina I miss the snow, but all it takes is flurries for the schools to close. I hear that you are not in the mood for snow yet, but I am STILL JEALOUS of your pretty fluffy white stuff! :-)

  5. The quilt top is looking great! I hate cutting, too. It is definitely my least favorite part; at least I can usually get on to the fun stuff after that. I would have a hard time resisting the mirror ball dots, personally, but with the snow I totally understand the minky!

  7. Snow in September is crazy! I'm hoping it doesn't come to Newfoundland for a long time yet. Your bargello quilt will be gorgeous.

  8. Snow - yuk. I would have to go mirror ball on the back, just to do justice to the amazing front. Mind you when I lived in a really cold house I used army surplus blankets instead of batting, just to make sure I ended up with something warm.

  9. I will be in Canada on Friday, but I don't think the snow has hit where I am headed. Hmmm. What to pack? Winter jacket or cotton dress?
I had a similar day recently. Heaps of time to sew on a Sunday. Hurrah! But the power was cut most of the day to our area for maintenance (rare) so my sewing machine was not an option. I also could not cut out as I needed to iron the screwed up balls of fabric first.

  10. It just doesn't seem right to have a snow day in September... I can't say I can think of a time when that's happened in NS. The bargello looks like it will be awesome. I share your fear of the minky fabric, especially when one thinks of all the pesky seams in the bargello. Call me chicken, but I think I'd go for the Mirror Ball.

  11. It's gorgeous and I luv the colors. I've made one bargello so far, but just a 2 color one. What part of Canada do you live in? I had a chance to visit Toronto AND Montreal this summer and really enjoyed it. I found you on the Bee Social linky. If you get a chance, stop by and visit my blog.

  13. I love your Bargello - I haven't made one yet but this one is gorgeous and something I'd like to try - can't believe your snowed in in September!

  14. I was joking with my teammates, "is it too soon for hope for a snow day?" they laughed my classroom is about 100 degrees. If only I moved further north! Yuck to all that snow. But, snow days are the best quilting days.

  15. Well since it's coming to love with me i vote mirror ball. It's coming to live with me right?! ;)
I love this one so much! But you can keep your snow! My little sis was visiting the older sis out west when all this happened, she wasn't impressed that her September vacation involved snow and downed trees!
